My Pork Rind Confession.

Anna • Dec 02, 2018

Yup, I LOVE pork rinds.

I have a confession to make. I love pork rinds. I mean I LOVE pork rinds. In some Ketogenic worlds they are considered “dirty Keto,” but I honestly don’t care. Now don’t get me wrong, I am a huge proponent of eating real, whole, nutritionally dense foods and a majority of my diet would be considered “clean Keto.” I love pork rinds though and eat them regularly. It’s fun to make Ketogenic versions of meatloaf, crab cakes, meatballs, Scotch Eggs, etc. and pork panko makes an ideal filler! I also use pork rinds instead of chips or crackers for dips!

There is an amazing farmer’s market in downtown Raleigh and I stopped by the other day. Much to my surprise one vendor was selling fresh, locally made pork rinds. Come to find out there is a little restaurant called Firehouse Foods near my house that makes these rinds. Color me excited! My favorite flavors are Red Hot (it’s like a chicken wing!) and BBQ. Ridiculous. So if you live in the Raleigh area definitely stop by Firehouse Foods. The ladies there are super friendly and you may even see them making the rinds fresh!

Now I’m not above gas station pork rinds because as far as a quick snack goes they are pretty dang good, BUT often the ingredients are less than ideal. You may find hidden carbs, MSG, and other less than ideal ingredients. Be sure to read labels on even foods that are said to be Ketogenic. I also order three brands off Amazon that fit the bill for a high quality pork rind. The brands are Epic , Bacon’s Heir , and Field Trip . Epic’s salt and pepper flavor is off the hook good. Bacon’s Heir makes Pork Clouds which are super delish also. The Malabar Black Pepper is my favorite flavor and will practically set your mouth on fire! …just the way I like it. Field Trip is another brand I recently discovered…and…O.M.G. they are soooooooo good. Field Trip pork rinds are the really fluffy kind that melt in your mouth. All their flavors fit my bill. Another great discovery I recently made is Carolina Gold Nuggets . These are microwavable pork rind pellets. When my husband saw me make these he thought I’d most certainly lost my mind…until he tried one! They come plain so you can flavor them anyway you want. I love to use smoked Alder salt or Cajun seasoning on them.

So there ya have it…Anna’s Pork Rind confession! I told you I loved pork rinds and I am totally down with sometimes being a “dirty Keto” girl!

Below I have included the websites for my favorite pork rinds.
